10 Easy Ways To Protect Your Family From Food Poisoning

10 Easy Ways To Protect Your Family From Food Poisoning
Terry Nicholls

Do you realize the many ways that bacteria can contaminate the
food YOUR FAMILY eats? Do you know how to tell if your food is
THOROUGHLY cooked to keep YOUR family safe from Food Poisoning?
Do you know what to do if you or SOMEONE YOU LOVE gets Food
Poisoning?

When it comes to food preparation and storage, "Common Practices"
could be POISONING your family!

Here's how to avoid the problem entirely:

1. Plan For Safety

Make sure you have the right equipment, including cutting boards,
utensils, food thermometers, cookware, shallow containers for
storage, soap, and paper towels. Make sure you have a source of
clean water. Plan ahead to ensure that there will be adequate
storage space in the refrigerator and freezer.

2. Shop Smart

Prevention of food poisoning starts with your trip to the
supermarket. Pick up your packaged and canned foods first. Buy
cans and jars that look perfect. Do the cans have dents? Don't
buy canned goods that are dented, cracked, or bulging. These are
the warning signs that dangerous bacteria may be growing in the
can. Are the jars cracked? Do they have lids that are loose or
bulging? The food may have germs that can make you sick. Look for
any expiration dates on the labels and never buy outdated food.
Likewise, check the "use by" or "sell by" date on dairy products
such as cottage cheese, cream cheese, yogurt, and sour cream and
pick the ones that will stay fresh longest in your refrigerator.

3. Store Food Properly

After shopping, get home as soon as you can. Then put food into
the refrigerator or freezer right away. Make sure to set the
refrigerator temperature to 40 F and the freezer to 0 F. Check
temperatures with an appliance thermometer. Be sure to
refrigerate or freeze perishables, prepared foods, and leftovers
within 2 hours of shopping or preparing. Place raw meat, poultry,
and seafood in containers in the refrigerator, to prevent their
juices from dripping on other foods. Raw juices may contain
harmful bacteria. Eggs always go in the refrigerator.

4. Prepare Food Safely

Wash hands and surfaces often. Bacteria can be spread throughout
the kitchen and get onto cutting boards, utensils and counter
tops. To prevent this, wash hands with soap and hot water before
and after handling food, and after using the bathroom, changing
diapers, or handling pets. Wash everything else before and after
it touches food. Use paper towels or clean cloths to wipe kitchen
surfaces or spills. Wash cloths before you use them again for
anything else. Use the hot cycle of your washing machine. Wash
cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and counter tops with hot,
soapy water after preparing each food item and before you go on
to the next item. A solution of 1 teaspoon of bleach in 1 quart
of water may be used to sanitize washed surfaces and utensils.

5. Cook Food Thoroughly

Cook food thoroughly until it is done. Cooked red meat looks
brown inside. Poke cooked chicken with a fork. The juices should
look clear, not pink. Dig a fork into cooked fish. The fish
should flake. Cooked egg whites and yolks are firm, not runny.
Use a food thermometer to check the internal temperature of meat,
poultry, casseroles and other food. Use a thermometer with a
small-diameter stem. Insert the thermometer 1 to 2 inches into
the center of the food and wait 30 seconds to ensure an accurate
measurement. Check temperature in several places to be sure the
food is evenly heated.

6. Chill Food Promptly

Place food in the refrigerator. Don't overfill the refrigerator.
Cool air must circulate to keep food safe. Divide food and place
in shallow containers. Slice roast beef or ham and layer in
containers in portions for service. Divide turkey into smaller
portions or slices & refrigerate. Remove stuffing from cavity
before refrigeration. Place soups or stews in shallow containers.
To cool quickly, place in ice water bath and stir. Cover and
label cooked foods. Include the preparation date on the label.

7. Transport Food Safely

Keep cold food cold. Place cold food in cooler with a cold source
such as ice or commercial freezing gels. Use plenty of ice or
commercial freezing gels. Cold food should be held at or below
40 F. Hot food should be kept hot, at or above 140 F. Wrap well
and place in an insulated container.

8. Reheat Food Correctly

Heat cooked, commercially vacuum-sealed, ready-to-eat foods, such
as hams and roasts, to 140 F. Foods that have been cooked ahead
& cooled should be reheated to at least 165 F. Reheat leftovers
thoroughly to at least 165 F. Reheat sauces, soups, and gravies
to a boil.

9. Serve Food The Safe Way

Use clean containers and utensils to store and serve food. When a
dish is empty or nearly empty, replace with fresh container of
food, removing the previous container. Place cold food in
containers on some ice. Hold cold foods at or below 40 F. Food
that will be portioned and served should be placed in a shallow
container. Place the container inside a deep pan filled partially
with ice to keep food cold. Once food is thoroughly heated on
stovetop, oven or in microwave oven, keep food hot by using a
heat source. Place food in chafing dishes, preheated steam
tables, warming trays and/or slow cookers. Check the temperature
frequently to be sure food stays at or above 140 F.

10. Complete Your Meal Experience Safely

Cooked foods should not be left standing on the table or kitchen
counter for more than 2 hours. Disease-causing bacteria grow in
temperatures between 40 F and 140 F. Cooked foods that have
been in this temperature range for more than 2 hours should not
be eaten. If a dish is to be served hot, get it from the stove to
the table as quickly as possible. Reheated foods should be
brought to a temperature of at least 165 F. Keep cold foods in
the refrigerator or on a bed of ice until serving. This rule is
particularly important to remember in the summer months.
Leftovers should be refrigerated as soon as possible. Meats
should be cut in slices of 3 inches or less and all foods should
be stored in small, shallow containers to hasten cooling. Be sure
to remove all the stuffing from roast turkey or chicken and store
it separately. Giblets should also be stored separately.
Leftovers should be used within 3 days. Discard any food left out
at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Regional Cuisine Of India: North Indian Flavors

Regional Cuisine Of India: North Indian Flavors
Kirsten Hawkins

India, one of the most populated nations in the world, has rich
and varied culinary traditions, many deeply enmeshed with
spiritual traditions that are thousands of years old. Other
culinary styles arrived throughout Indias long history with
those who wandered into the land from afar and settled here and
there, as well as with those who invaded its territories,
overtaking native populations. Still others have been shaped by
the natural forces climate and geography. These many culinary
styles can be generally divided into four regional cuisines,
with North Indian flavors and style standing out distinctly
from the rest.

The northern part of India, it is said, is part of India in
which the influence of the early light-skinned Aryan invaders
can still be seen, in the cuisine, culture, and language. This
is the part of the world in which Sanskrit is thought to have
evolved. North Indian cuisine encompasses the culinary
traditions of the various northern countries, including
Punjabi, Kashmiri, Awadh, Rajasthani, Marwari, Gharwal, and
Pahari. Due to climate and growing conditions, wheat plays a
stronger role in North Indian cuisine than in other areas of
the country. Tandoori cuisine comes from the north.

Spices are an essential element to Indian cuisine, and they use
some of the most aromatic and beautiful spices on earth.
Historically, however, in addition to serving to add delectable
flavors and attractive aromas, the spices were chosen for their
food preservation and medicinal properties. While many spices
are common throughout most Indian cuisines, the methods and
ratios of usage differ in each region, with some spices being
much more common in some areas and other flavors being more
specific to certain areas. North Indian cooks tend to use their
spices in freshly ground powder form.

Chili peppers are common to Indian cuisine, and in the north,
the Degchi Mirchi, or Kashmiri chili pepper are especially
popular. Ground red chili powder is important North Indian
flavor, as is turmeric, cumin, coriander, sweet bay or laurel
leaves, black and green cardamom, cassia tree bark, for which
cinnamon is often substituted, cloves, nutmeg, saffron, black
and yellow mustard seeds, fennel, fenugreek, asafetida, curry
leaves, tamarind, and fresh cilantro leaves and mint leaves.

Garam masala is a spice mixture used extensively in North
Indian cuisine. This is a blend of spices, which is loosely
built upon a set of common spices, but varies widely from
region to region, even from family to family. In the north, a
basic garam masala would consist of raw cardamom seeds,
cinnamon, cloves and black pepper. Ghee, or clarified butter,
is particularly important to the flavor of northern cuisine.

Flat breads of various types, including roti, puri, chapattis,
different types parantha, and tandoori baked breads, such as
nan, are a part of most north Indian meals. Showing the
religious influence of the Vaishnava Hindus, the northern
states, Uttar Pradesh in particular, have created some of the
finest vegetarian cuisine in the world, built upon a wide
variety of pulses, or legumes and fragrant Basmati rice.

North Indian flavors have become an important part of
international cuisine, spreading throughout the worlds
metropolitan centers and into the food cultures of many
countries. Beloved especially for its specialized tandoori
dishes and vegetarian creations, North Indian cuisine continues
to expand and flourish globally.

And You Thought Coffee Was Bad For You!!!

And You Thought Coffee Was Bad For You!!!
Contributed by Vincent Manzello

I am sure that if you are a coffee enthusiast, you have heard this, but if not let me state it here. "Coffee is good for you!"

Recent research has shown that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the American diet. Antioxidants, are nutrients that are responsible from protecting your body's cells from being destroyed by toxins. This destruction has been linked to an increased risk of certain medical conditions, such as cancer, heart disease and others.

Antioxidants are found in the good stuff that our mothers made us eat when we were little, namely fruits & veggies. Amazingly, many of us didn't listen and took up coffee instead because more Americans get their daily dose of antioxidants from coffee than from broccoli!

The top 10 list for the the source of antioxidants in the American diet were listed as follows:

1. Coffee
2. Black Tea
3. Bananas
4. Dried Beans
5. Corn
6. Red Wine
7. Beer
8. Apples
9. Tomatoes
10.Potatoes

Research also showed that there was esentially no difference between the amount of antioxidants in regular versus decaf coffees.

Now this doesn't mean that you should run out and consume mass
amounts of coffee. Like everything in life, moderation is the key!

And by the way, you should still eat your fruits and veggies, just
finish them off with a great cup of coffee!

Dream car getting tips

Dream car getting tips
Contributed by Qamar iqbal

When it comes to getting a car loan it’s almost as hard as getting a home loan. Thousands of people are denied auto loans every day because of their less than perfect credit history. Here are some suggestions for you to follow when trying to buy a car without that perfect credit. If you have ever been turned down for a financing on a car loan, you know that you have different options in obtaining that car. You can choose to go with the Lease option. Leasing provides you with lower up-front costs and lower monthly payments. A lease contract often allows your typical up-front costs to be just as little as a refundable security deposit and your first month’s payment.

Since you are paying for portion of the value you use during your lease, rather than the entire value of the car, lease payments are usually lower than the purchase agreement. This option is also great for those people who change cars every 3 or 4 years. If you can’t decide between buying the car and leasing, without a doubt, a lease options allows you to use the more expensive car for less than what it would cost you to buy the car.

If you want to go through the traditional financing route in purchasing your car, make sure you know the terms and agreement. Always negotiate the car price first and know what you are being charged for the car. Keep this in mind when you get a car loan through financing. Don’t ever agree to go over a 36-month term on your contract. If you do, you will end up paying more interest with a longer-term agreement.

Another thing to keep in mind when you go to get a car loan is always do your homework first before going to the dealership. This means that you should check out your credit report first and get a pre-approved car loan from your bank before buying the car. First, find your choice or a car and do some research on that car. After you have done the research, go to your local credit union or your bank and apply for a loan. This process is a lot easier to go through than having to deal with the dealership and this way you will end up with a better deal and end up paying less for that special car.

Becoming Debt Free Requires Desire

Becoming Debt Free Requires Desire
Contributed by Stuart Laing

You want to escape from your debts, right? But before you make a start, let me remind you that it won’t be easy. In fact, it could be one of the hardest things that you’ll ever do in your life.

Don’t be under any illusions about this. Enormous self-discipline is required from you. The more you owe, the harder this will be, and the longer it will take.

You must genuinely desire to become completely and utterly debt free. Achieving such a difficult task is only possible if you’re 100% committed to it. Clearing your debts is an all or nothing decision. Ninety-nine percent is no good!

If you’re at the stage where you’d ‘like’ to pay off all your debts, I can tell you now that you won’t get very far. That’s nothing more than a vague pipedream that ranks up there with ‘I’d like to go to the moon’.

Make a promise to yourself to repay your debts as soon as possible. Get the bit between your teeth and keep plugging away at it until you’re completely and utterly DEBT FREE! Then vow never to borrow ever again!

Feed your desire to become debt free

Remind yourself how hacked off you are that you could have allowed yourself to get into such a mess. If you aren’t annoyed by the very existence of your debts, then I suggest you do whatever it takes to become that way, because:

1) If you still passively accept the fact that you’re in debt, you won’t have the motivation to get the job started and see it through to completion.

2) If you think that your debts ‘aren’t too bad’ you won’t have the willpower to keep chipping away at them when times get tough, and

3) If you still believe that debts are inevitable, then you’ll never be debt free. That, I can virtually guarantee!

You must be ready to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes. And once you’ve started, you must be prepared to keep going until you owe nothing. It could take months or even years. But that shouldn’t matter, because your sole focus should be on the day when you become free of debt.

There’s little point in trying hard for three weeks and then blowing all the extra money that you’ve saved to reduce your debts, on some ‘treat’ that you ‘deserve’.

Everything that you put towards reducing the size of your debt makes a difference. It should be enough of a treat to know that your total debt is becoming smaller with every day that passes and that you’re moving nearer to freedom from debt.

So, are you ready to beat your debts to death with every bit of money that comes into your possession over the weeks, months and even years that follow?

Desire and grim determination. Nothing less will do!

The Danger Of Negative Thinking

The Danger Of Negative Thinking
Contributed by kevin quigley
As you have shown an interest in starting a business of
your own it would be safe to assume that you want to change
your life. You want more money - more control over your
life - more respect. But just as we each have a dream, we
also have a reality.

Unfortunately for most people, the reality bears no
similarity whatsoever to the dream. In many cases, the
dream exists as an escape from the reality.

Think now of YOUR reality - the life you lead every day.
What do you do? How do you feel as you awake? Do you have
any enthusiasm for your way of life? Do you enjoy your
work, or are you on welfare? Then ask yourself this
important question: Do you resent having to live this way?

If you answer 'yes' to that question, then you are in danger
of succumbing to the most destructive human emotion - Hate.

If you hate the life you live, the people you deal with, the
actions you are forced to take, then you will find yourself
rapidly rushing toward disaster. When you hate, you may as
well be drunk! You no longer function in a creative manner.
Your mind is geared toward destruction. Instead of aiming
to create a new life for yourself and those you love, you
will become obsessed with the act of revenge.

The more that you hate the people and situations around you,
the more your mind becomes poisoned with the purpose of
getting even. Logical thought becomes impossible and hate
then becomes a substitute for action. You must learn NOW,
to resist the urge to hate. It achieves nothing constructive
and it will destroy both you and your dreams of
success. As Ghandi said..."An eye for an eye just makes the
whole world go blind."

Take a good look at your way of life. Do you always have to
make do with what you have got, because you can't afford a
replacement? Are you always having to put off paying bills
until next week? Have you never enough money to enjoy
yourself? Are you unhappy with the area in which you live?

You may find that you are regularly having to write a check
on Monday and hope that you will be able to cover it by
Thursday. Or you may just be sick of the daily grind of
early mornings, or the regular nightshift. If most of these
apply to you, the you probably hate living this way. So now
make a POSITIVE effort to achieve success. Only through
positive endevour and thought will you achieve your goal.

Although your current way of life may be hard, think not how
to get rid of it, but how to REPLACE it with a better way of
life. Think SUCCESS - not revenge. Assess what you resent
about your life now.

You may even resent the things that you would normally
enjoy, were your circumstances different. Occassions like
Christmas, birthdays, and Easter can can be trying times
when you have no money to spend. Children don't understand
the restrictions of a tight budget, and it can cause great
distress to a parent who is unable to give his child the
gift, or day out, that they would like. Now imagine the
difference in these circumstances when you have achieved
success and you are wealthy.

There is no harm in imagining the difference your wealth
will make to your lifestyle - but approach it
lightheartedly.

Say to yourself: I will work to be a success so that I can
tell my boss where to stick his job! And so I can see the
look on the Bank managers face when I tell him not to bother
offering me overdraft facilities anymore! This attitude is
positive, but don't hate the way things are, or the people
it involves. That would only make things worse. You will
have plenty of time to reflect on your past when you are
wealthy!

These things that make you miserable and depressed will be
all behind you when you put the secrets of success to work:
http://heh.pl/&cX Imagine life without all these trying times.
You will be able to enjoy Christmas, and give your kids what
they want. That squillion function, water-resistant, solar-
powered gizmo (that they ALWAYS wanted) will be a drop in
the ocean to you!

Many of the people who buy books on starting a business
actually don't bother starting up. They can't imagine
themselves ever running their own business and earning
Unlimited amounts of money. They never see things how
they CAN be - only how they are. Don't make this mistake!
KNOW what you want, KNOW how to get it, SEE how it WILL
be, and then GO FOR IT!!

Yours in success.

Guide To Massaging New Born Babies

Guide To Massaging New Born Babies
Kevin Pederson

Newborns simply love to be touched and cuddled. The skin to skin
touch helps you and your baby bond, comforts your baby when she
is upset or uneasy with gas or colic problems. Hence, touch is a
critical part of growth and development.

The massage strokes used on adults are completely different from
the strokes to be used on newborns. You can adapt the adult
strokes to massage your child. Just make sure that your strokes
are lighter on them. The younger they are, more delicate and
smaller will be the strokes be.

It is ideal that you take your child either on your lap or lay
him on any kind of elevated soft surface such as few thick towels
put together. Be very gentle while massaging. If your child cries
or does not enjoy it, stop massaging till it feels comfortable
about the whole thing.

Massage steps for the front of the body - Lay the child on the
back. Start by stroking gently the face, move to the middle of
the forehead and temples - Stroke the cheeks from nose to ears
and back moving down to the chin. Gently stroke the area around
the eyes. - Stroke the front of the body along the arms. Make
clockwise circles around the navel with both hands. Do gentle
wringing action across the abdomen and up the body. - Take one
arm at a time, start stroking from shoulder to hand to fingers.
Massage the hand, squeeze and rotate each of the fingers in turn.
Do the same for other arm. - Take one leg at time. Do a gentle
wring or squeeze up the leg and stroke down the leg. Do the same
for other arm.

Massage steps for the back of the body - Lay the child stomach
down. Stoke up and over the back and along the arms. - Do a
gentle kneading on the child's shoulder - Do a gentle wringing
stroke all over the body. Massage the rear side with gentle
kneading or pinching strokes. - Slide smoothly down the spine
alternating with both the hands. Start from the base of the neck
and move to working down to the base of spine. - Gently stroke
the legs, bending the knee up and working all the way to the
foot. - Hold the anklebone between your fingertips and move both
the hands in circular motion. - Squeeze the heal with one hand
and use the thumb of your other hand to massage the sole of the
foot. - Massage the toes by gentle squeezing, rotating and
pulling it in turns. Hold the foot firmly between your hands for
few seconds. Repeat the same for massaging the backside of other
leg.

Lastly, turn the baby over and give it a final massage in two
strokes. Start from one foot up the leg, across the lower abdomen
and move down the other leg. Do light strokes from the top of
head right down to the feet.

To massage the baby having gas or digestive problems, use the "I
Love You" technique.

- Lay the baby on the back and undress it completely or just
leave the diaper on. - Use two or three fingers of your right
hand to trace the alphabet "I" on the right side of the abdomen
with gentle, yet firm movements. - Next do a gentle stroke from
left to right across the baby's abdomen and then do a small
downward stroke along the right side of his stomach forming
upside down "L" alphabet. - Last, stroke up from the left side of
your baby's hipbone moving towards the left side of the abdomen,
across the babys body from left to right horizontally along the
stomach and finally finish by stroking down the right side in the
same manner, forming the "U" alphabet in upside down direction.

7 Steps to Interviews That Win the Job

7 Steps to Interviews That Win the Job
By: Cathy Goodwin, Ph.D.

These days, interviews don't come easily. When you get The Call, make the most of your time -- and go for it!

1. Investigate the company's culture, markets, and finances. But resist the temptation to show off what you've researched: "I just read that you're about to embark on a new product line") unless you have a question directly related to your career.

2. Look like you belong. Learn the company's dress code and err on the side of conservatism. When you're seeking a senior position based on industry experience, you'll be expected to know the rules without being told.

3. Take charge of the interview! The most successful interviews feel like friendly conversations. When your interviewer has an agenda (such as the infamous "stress interview") stay relaxed. Think of playing a game.

4. Assume everyone you meet will provide feedback to the decision-maker. Some companies hand out comment forms to receptionists, security guards and potential peers who take you to lunch.

5. Communicate interest and enthusiasm, even if you're not sure you're ready to commit. You'll rarely have all the facts until you're looking at an offer.

6. Bring extra copies of your correspondence from this company as well as your resume, references, writing samples, portfolio and current business cards. Interviewers lose documents and conversations move in unexpected directions.

7. Create a relaxed, positive attitude by devising a realistic game plan. When your career isn't riding on a single interview, you'll have fun and make a confident, relaxed impression.

8. Write a thank you letter within forty-eight hours. Create a low-key sales letter, emphasizing how your qualifications match the company's needs. Present yourself as a resource, not a supplicant.

9. After you write the letter, forget about the interview. Email or phone only if you've received a competing offer with a deadline.

Occasionally you may make points with follow-up mailings. A sports team public relations applicant sent puzzles, games and press releases -- and she got the job. Use your intuition.

10. Keep notes of what you learned from the process. What worked? What would you do differently?

As soon as you begin your new job, develop a career plan and a safety net before you need one.
